DESCRIPTION:In this talk I discuss the place of botany within
 Hans Sloane's library. Moving between _horti sicci
 _\, print\, and manuscript\, I explore Sloane's pr
 esentation and storage of botanical collections wi
 thin the library space and argue that the need to
 visually reproduce plants in printed books led to
 a triangulation of shared material: the original s
 pecimen\, the engraved reproduction\, and the atte
 mpt to identify or describe through language. I th
 en move to a discussion of John Ray's _Catalogus P
 lantarum Angliae et insularum adjacentium_ (1670\;
  1677)\, comparing the annotations across the eigh
 t copies (of two editions) owned by Sloane and arg
 uing that the value in the duplication of books wi
 thin Sloane's library was affected by the material
  existences of the individual copies. I conclude w
 ith a brief discussion of plant names in John Milt
 on's _Paradise Lost_\, showing how the library spa
 ce as conceptualised through the discussion of Slo
 ane can be extended metaphorically.
