DESCRIPTION:In this talk I shall review the concept of limiting essential 
 spectrum and several different concepts of essentialnumerical range\, incl
 uding for pencils\, and discuss how they may be used to examine or exclude
  spectral&nbsp\;pollution phenomena when treating differential operators n
 umerically. Examples we can treat include Schroedinger operators with Star
 k potentials\, and Maxwell systems with spectra depending upon their domai
 ns in an unstable way.
