DESCRIPTION:The menopause has received much attention lately and meno-wash
ing is all the rage. However\, the discussions on whether this hormonal ch
ange affects brain function long-term and whether it can and should be mit
igated by hormone treatment has been ongoing since the mid-fifties. In thi
s talk we discuss the history of menopausal hormone treatment (MHT) and br
ain function in women. We present evidence on whether mental health and co
gnitive function actually change after the menopause and in whom. We also
discuss meta-analyses using medical registry data which paradoxically sugg
ested increased Alzheimer’s disease (AD) risk with MHT. Alternative evid
ence-based lifestyle interventions and effectivity in reducing both menopa
usal symptoms and AD risk are also reviewed.
