DESCRIPTION:Professor Sir David MacKay (1967-2016) made fundam
ental contributions to both public and theoretical
understandings of energy and of information. He s
erved as Chief Scientific Adviser to the Departmen
t of Energy and Climate Change and was Professor o
f Natural Philosophy in the Cavendish Laboratory b
efore being appointed as the inaugural Regius Prof
essor of Engineering. He was a Fellow of Darwin Co
llege. \n\nThis one-day meeting of the Cambridge P
 hilosophical Society\, dedicated to his memory\, c
onsiders both the urgent challenges of sustainable
energy resources and the global opportunities ari
sing from information technologies. We will be add
ressing the two main themes of his work: machine l
earning\, information theory and Bayesian inferenc
e\, together with sustainable energy. The meeting
marks the tenth anniversary of David’s death\, wit
h speakers who worked with David\, build on his co
ntributions in the field of energy and information
\, and share his values on the importance of clear
and accessible communication.\n\nThe meeting in C
ambridge University Engineering Department is open
to all to attend\, without charge. The lectures w
ill be live-streamed\; edited recordings will late
r be made available through the Cambridge Philosop
hical Society website. \n\nRegistration for both i
n-person and virtual attendance is recommended and
  will open in December.
