DESCRIPTION:Cells use biomolecular condensates to organize and regulate wh
en and where proteins are made. Among these\, cytoplasmic RNA granules\, i
ncluding stress granules\, P bodies\, neuronal RNA granules\, and germ gra
nules\, play a key role in storing and activating mRNAs\, yet how individu
al components drive their function has been difficult to disentangle. By r
ebuilding germ granules from defined parts\, we found that the DEAD-box RN
A helicase Vasa and a simple RNA-binding scaffold are sufficient to recrui
t specific RNAs and trigger their translation. These findings reveal a min
imal module for localized protein synthesis and show how synthetic biology
can shed light on the principles of cellular organization.
