DESCRIPTION:Advances in radio interferometry have made it possible to imag
e the gravitationally lensed millimetre emission from the immediate surrou
ndings of the supermassive black holes in M87 and SgrA. In this talk *prof
. Huib van Langevelde (JIVE\, Leiden\, EHT project director)* will describ
e the *Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI)* setup used by the *Event
Horizon Telescope*. The two targets that can be resolved are very differen
t in size\, but similar in appearance. The scientists in this global colla
boration took extensive measures to verify the robustness of these results
before comparing them to predictions of General relativity. The perspecti
ves for future research will be discussed.
