DESCRIPTION:All are invited to the hybrid Bradford Hill Semina
r 'The politics of epidemiology and public health
in the UK' with Professor Danny Dorling of the Uni
versity of Oxford.\n\nAttend in person or register
  to attend online at https://mrc-epid.zoom.us/mee
 ting/register/Xt6c2C_hR7a2xOFqlKb5Dg\n\nWe like to
present epidemiology as politically neutral\, and
public health as the science of supporting the he
alth of the population as a whole. This is not nec
essarily so.\n\nThere are always choices to be mad
 e. Different academic disciplines have implicit bi
ases and underlying beliefs\, which can change ove
r time and differ greatly between contexts. Some o
f the most obvious examples are between people who
prefer individualistic explanations and those who
see this as victim blaming.\n\nA lack of attentio
n to certain topics is another form of political b
ias. Why\, for instance\, are we in the UK not mor
e concerned about how many people choose and can a
fford to use private health care and dentistry? Wh
y are we not talking about how life expectancy fel
l in the UK after 2014? And\, to what extent is ou
r epidemiology and public health in the UK in the
 2020s a reflection of UK politics?\n\nAbout Profes
sor Dorling: \nDanny Dorling works at the Universi
ty of Oxford. His most recent three books are: “Se
ven Children”\, "Peak Injustice”\, and “The Next C
risis”. He works with road crash charity RoadPeace
\, Heeley City Farm in Sheffield\, and the educati
 onal campaign group Comprehensive Future.
