DESCRIPTION:The homogenization problem in elasto-plasticity concerns the p
assage from discrete to fields of dislocations. While much consensus exist
s on what the physical laws are for the individual dislocations\, it is no
t clear - and in fact one of the most pressing open problems of solid mech
anics - how to formulate laws for the movement of dislocation fields and t
he corresponding elasto-plastic effects. I will present some recent result
s showing that in a prototypical model of small-strain\, geometrically lin
ear plasticity in single crystals and with rate-independent dynamics\, suc
h a homogenization procedure from discrete dislocation lines to dislocatio
n fields can indeed be carried out in a rigorous fashion.
