DESCRIPTION:Molecular wires are the simplest single-molecule electronic de
vices\, and they can be viewed as the elementary components of bulk organi
c semiconductors. Molecular wire rings exhibit fundamentally different beh
aviour from straight molecular wires\, leading to the phenomenon of aromat
icity. This lecture will present the synthesis and investigation of variou
s linear and cyclic molecular wires\, including polyynes\, cyclocarbons an
d porphyrin nanobelts\, with an emphasis on understanding electronic deloc
alisation in long chains and large rings.
