DESCRIPTION:I will discuss a group-theoretic procedure that simulates the 
 effect at the level of the fundamental group of removing a closed geodesic
  from a hyperbolic 3-manifold\, and can be thought of as the inverse proce
 dure of peripheral filling for relatively hyperbolic groups. The main appl
 ication will be establishing a connection between two versions of Cannon's
  Conjecture\, and I will try to argue that one of them should be less hard
  than the other one. Joint work with D. Groves\, P. Haissinsky\, J. Mannin
 g\, D. Osajda\, and G. Walsh.
