DESCRIPTION:I will discuss recent work\, joint with Mark Kambites\, N&oacu
 te\;ra Szak&aacute\;cs\, and Richard Webb (Manchester)\, on determining th
 e exact exponential growth rate of free inverse semigroups\, algebraic obj
 ects arising from considering finite connected subgraphs of the Cayley gra
 ph of the free group. These growth rates turn out to be algebraic numbers 
 with rather mysterious defining polynomials. I will also briefly discuss g
 rowth rates of closely related algebraic objects\, called free regular *-s
 emigroups\, and show that the growth rate for the monogenic such object is
  intermediate.&nbsp\;
