DESCRIPTION:In stark contrast to the regular enlistment of a lifetime of s
ervice anywhere\, the fencible regiments were created for service in Scotl
and only\, later Britain\, and only for the duration of the French Revolut
ionary War. Such limits were not new and\, in conjunction with the early s
tages of trade unionism\, these men therefore engaged with civilian and mi
litary conceptions of negotiation with authority. This paper will evaluate
several key events\, particularly the spring 1794 “mutinies”\, to con
sider how fencibles demonstrated both this engagement and their broader un
derstanding of their soldiering as a contractual form of labour.\n\nJoin t
