DESCRIPTION:The cop numbers are two new integer-valued invariants of finit
 ely generated groups defined in terms of winning strategies in two player 
 "cops and robbers" pursuit game played on Cayley graphs. We use the cop nu
 mbers to give a new characterization of hyperbolic groups and virtually fr
 ee groups. We discuss examples\, potential applications and open questions
