SUMMARY:Behaviour of structures under extreme dynamic loadings: Characteri
sation and modelling - Yong Lu\, Institute for Infrastructure and Environm
 ent\, The University of Edinburgh

DESCRIPTION:This talk concerns the response of structures and concrete-lik
e materials under high rate loading\, especially impact and blast. The cha
racteristics of the structural response are discussed in comparison with t
he lower dynamic response due for example to seismic excitation. The parti
cularities in the governing failure mechanisms and the pertinent analysis/
modeling requirements are highlighted. This is followed by a brief present
ation of some recent modeling studies on the dynamic behaviour of concrete
  materials using a mesoscale approach.
