DESCRIPTION:Complex quantum materials are at the forefront of both the dri
ve to understand the fundamentals of physics and chemistry and the quest t
o find the basis of new quantum technologies. Such materials host exotic p
henomena such as quantum spin liquid\, spin-orbit driven Mott insulator an
d topological semimetal states. Often these phases arise from a delicate b
alance of competing interactions and precise details of structural symmetr
ies and subtle distortions must be resolved to enable effective partnershi
p with theory. However\, to succeed in elucidating these structure-propert
y relationships\, additional materials chemistry challenges such as the ef
fects of disorder\, non-stoichiometry\, and lack of reproducibility of syn
thesis must regularly be tackled. I will outline recent examples of our in
vestigations in this arena and present an outlook to enabling the design o
f the next generation of quantum materials.\n\nThe talk will be followed b
y a special careers session where Dr Gibbs will give a summary of her care
er journey and take any questions.\n
