DESCRIPTION:This presentation explores the evolution of the Ba
nk of England in the aftermath of the First World
War. It describes how and why the Bank began emplo
ying technical advisers to determine economic poli
cy. Although the Bank's primary goal was to defend
the status of the City of London as an internatio
nal financial centre\, it became increasingly invo
lved in areas unprecedented for a central bank\, i
ncluding industrial policy\, foreign affairs and i
mperial relations. In the aftermath of the Great D
epression and amidst preparations for another worl
d war\, the Bank ended the interwar years as a pub
 lic-oriented institution.
