  Von Hügel Institute/Capability and Sustainability Network\, University o
 f Cambridge\, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program
 me/HDRO\, are pleased to announce a workshop on ‘Twenty Years of Human D
 evelopment: the past and the future of the Human Development Index’. The
  aim of this workshop is twofold: to stimulate further understanding of th
 e last twenty years of the Human Development perspective and to examine pr
 oposals for improving its future prospects.\n\nKey-note addresses will be 
 delivered by Sir Richard Jolly and by Dr Francisco Rodríguez\, Head of Re
 search of the Human Development Report Office (UNDP) and there will be the
 matic sessions on:\n\nSession 1 – Human Development: historical roots an
 d conceptual foundations\n\nSession 2 – Human Development and Participat
 ion\n\nSession 3 – Local Human Development\n\nSession 4 – Alternatives
  to the HDI \n\nSession 5 – Education\, Agency and Poverty\n\nSession 6 
 – Communication and Human Development\n\nSession 7 – Policies and Inst
 itutions for Human Development\n\n\nSelected papers address a wide range o
 f issues such as:\n\n* The added-value of the Human Development Approach\,
  in comparison to past and contemporary perspectives\, such as Basic Needs
 \, Happiness\, Sustainable Development and Participatory Approaches\, amon
 g others.\n\n* Measurement of human development through quantitative indic
 es\, such as the HDI \, HPIs\, GEM and GDI \, as well as proposals for new
  indicators.\n\n* Assessment of progress in human development in the world
  over the past fifty years.\n\n* The policy implications of the Human Deve
 lopment Approach\, with particular emphasis on how adopting an HD approach
  affects the formulation of development strategies.\n\n* The role of inter
