DESCRIPTION:The lexicon is strewn with alliterating near synon
yms. They probably arose from original echo format
ions like spic and span. The echo formations in th
eir turn arose through a combination of two actors
\, an adaptation of near-synonyms to their hosts v
ia etymologically unmotivated affixation\; and the
outcome of a word-game which creates portmanteau
 words like smog.
