DESCRIPTION:Food and farming have a greater impact on other sp
ecies than any other sector\, yet how best to limi
t these effects is contested. Reviewing progress i
n interventions to encourage less damaging diets a
nd to cut food loss and waste I conclude that both
are essential\, but far from sufficient. On the s
upply side\, quantification of the biodiversity im
pacts of land-sharing\, land-sparing and mixed app
roaches for almost 2000 individually-assessed spec
ies reveals that on five continents high-yield far
ming and sparing consistently outperform land shar
ing\, and also offer considerable potential for lo
wering greenhouse gas emissions. In contrast\, sha
ring approaches that lower yields (such as organic
production) risk causing grave damage to the majo
 rity of wild species.
