DESCRIPTION:When I started doing research on conservation biol
ogy\, over 20 years ago\, the focus was primarily
on assessing and protecting habitats and species.
Taxonomy can be very useful – we all like to organ
ise and label things after all. However\, we have
come to realise it may not suffice to protect the
diversity of forms and functions on Earth. To tack
le the twin crises of biodiversity loss and climat
e change\, conservation has expanded its focus to
the evolutionary and functional dimensions of biod
iversity. In this talk I will discuss the benefits
and challenges of considering functional diversit
y for conservation assessment. How can we measure
it? How can we protect it? And why should you care
 ?
