DESCRIPTION:The aim of this talk is to share a taste of the flavourful fie
ld that is symplectic topology\; what objects it studies\, what tools are
used to study them\, and some of the questions it addresses. Originally br
ought to light for being the natural setting of Hamiltonian mechanics\, sy
mplectic manifolds are fascinating objects whose study will take you on a
journey through fields as diverse as low dimensional topology\, holomorphi
c curve theory\, A_∞ categories\, mirror symmetry (hence algebraic geome
try)\, dynamical systems\, etc. We will give special attention to a useful
tool known as moment maps\, which formalise the study of symplectic manif
olds equipped with quantities conserved by certain symmetries (related to
 Noether’s principle in classical mechanics).
