DESCRIPTION:Mechatronic systems consist of components from several competi
ng vendors. Ensuring the compatibility of these components is crucial to r
eaching the optimal performance of the system\, minimizing energy consumpt
ion and reducing the maintenance need. Currently\, analysis of the compati
bility of the components necessitates a considerable amount of manual work
\, as the components are not shared openly and finding component informati
on is laborious. This results in a current design paradigm with suboptimal
components and a lack of collaboration between vendors and system integra
tors. This presentation discusses a paradigm shift towards a more collabor
ative and automated design of mechatronic systems using intellectual prope
rty (IP)-protected digital twins that are shared openly. The proposed appr
oach relies on Digital Twin Web\, SSP (System Structure and Parameterizati
on)\, FMU (Functional Mockup Interface)\, and ontologies. This approach al
lows for the iterative development of a mechatronic system\, during which
both the components and system design are adjusted based on simulation res
ults. The whole system can be optimized earlier in the production process\
, and fewer adjustments are needed in the later design and production phas
es. Ultimately\, this leads to better performance of mechatronic systems w
 ith less manual work.\n\nSpeaker's bio:\n\nRiku Ala-Laurinaho is a postdoc
 toral researcher at Aalto University\, earning his B.Sc. in 2018\, M.Sc. i
 n 2019\, and D.Sc. in 2021 — all from Aalto University. With a passion f
or driving digital transformation in industrial settings\, he currently le
ads the Aalto Digital Twin Lab. The lab focuses on networked digital twins
\, industrial information integration\, and metaverse through industrial c
ollaboration. Dr Ala-Laurinaho also serves as the project manager of the C
o-Des (Digital transformation of collaborative powertrain design) project\
, which aims to enable automated ship powertrain design using digital twin
 s. His current research interests include the interoperability of digital
twins\, industrial internet\, and system integration in smart factories.\n
