DESCRIPTION:At the edge of meso-scale oceanic eddies (including meddies)\,
horizontal layering is observed\, corresponding to density steps. This is
a local signature of an intense vertical mixing\, which could participate
in closing the energy budget of the oceans. To quantify the importance of
this mechanism\, we first need to determine the origin of the underlying
instability/ies. This is the purpose of our combined theoretical and exper
imental study\, where we systematically assess the intensity and the struc
tures of the various instabilities taking place around model vortices in a
rotating stratified ambient\, as a function of the Rossby\, Froude\, Ekma
 n\, and Schmidt numbers.
