DESCRIPTION:Several studies have shown that a high proportion of exoplanet
s orbit a component of a binary system. It is thought that the Kozai mecha
nism may play a significant role in disrupting the orbits of planets in bi
nary systems\, and it has been shown that it can cause high eccentricities
in planetary orbits. I show that the Kozai mechanism can be induced in pl
anets orbiting binary components by the dynamical processing of the initia
l population in a typical star cluster. In particular\, I discuss the impl
ications of the Kozai mechanism for outer planetary systems.
