DESCRIPTION:Advances in generative AI (GenAI) have raised conc
erns about detecting and discerning AI-generated c
ontent from human-generated content. Existing work
often uses a paradigm where ‘expert' organized di
sinformation creators and flawed AI models deceive
'ordinary' users. Based on longitudinal ethnograp
hic research with misinformation creators and cons
umers\, we instead find that GenAI supports ‘brico
lage work’\, where non-experts increasingly use Ge
nAI to (re)produce content to meet individual need
 s. \n\nParticipants primarily used GenAI for creat
ion rather than truth-seeking. A spreading 'influe
ncer millionaire' narrative drove participants to
become content creators\, using GenAI as a product
ivity tool to generate volumes of (often misinform
ative) content. GenAI lowered the barrier to entry
for content creation\, enticing consumers to beco
me creators and significantly increasing existing
creators’ output. Participants used Gen AI to lear
n and deploy tactics to expand engagement and mone
tize their content. In this talk\, I argue for shi
fting analysis from the public as consumers of AI
content to bricoleurs who use GenAI creatively\, o
ften without a detailed understanding of its under
lying technology. This talk discusses how these un
derstudied emergent uses of GenAI produce new or a
ccelerated misinformation harms and their implicat
 ions for abuse mitigation.\n\n\nhttps://cam-ac-uk.
