ata and general circulation models - Dr Johannes Quaas\, Max Planck Instit

DESCRIPTION:Aerosol indirect effects\, the influence of anthropogenic aero
sols serving as cloud condensation nuclei on cloud properties and subseque
ntly planetary albedo\, constitute one of the largest uncertainties among
anthropogenic climate forcings. Satellite data are useful to constrain aer
osol-cloud interaction parameterizations in general circulation models. On
the other hand\, models may help to \ninterpret statistical relationships
between aerosol and cloud properties found from satellite data analysis.
An overview is given of studies using statistical relationships between cl
oud and radiation properties and aerosol concentration as derived from sat
ellite data to constrain GCM parameterizations of aerosol indirect effects
. Conversely\, the strongly positive relationship found in satellite data
between cloud cover and aerosol optical depth is interpreted using sensiti
 vity studies with a GCM.
