DESCRIPTION:High-performance computing (HPC) has emerged as a
crucial tool for advancing wind energy research an
d development. The ever-increasing demand for clea
n and renewable energy sources\, coupled with the
inherent complexities of wind energy systems\, req
uires the use of HPC to address the various challe
nges in this field. This talk will highlight the s
 ignificance\, applications\, and potential benefit
s of HPC for wind energy research.\n\nI will brief
ly introduce the open-source framework Xcompact3d\
, dedicated to the study of turbulent flows on HPC
systems. Based on high-order finite-difference sc
hemes on a Cartesian mesh\, it combines accuracy\,
  efficiency\, versatility and scalability. Xcompac
t3d can be used as a wind farm simulator for simul
ating and analysing wind energy scenarios in a vir
tual environment. I will present a collection of r
esults ranging from the study of the stability of
wind turbine tip vortices\, the entrainment proces
s in large-scale wind farms\, some layout optimisa
tions with complex terrains\, and some power maxim
 isation studies using wake steering.
