DESCRIPTION:For most of Earth’s history\, soft tissues were ra
rely captured by the fossil record. Yet\, for a br
ief window in the Ediacaran and early Palaeozoic\,
exceptional preservation of animal soft tissues w
as commonplace. Probing the genomes of a diverse a
rray of microorganisms reveals metabolic innovatio
ns that substantially increase the decay rate of a
nimal tissues\, coincident with the decline of Edi
 acaran-style exceptional preservation.
