DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT: With the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) about to c
ommence operation\, we are on the threshold of one of the most exciting er
as in modern particle physics. Although the LHC will almost certainly unve
il the secrets of the fundamental nature of matter and forces\, the collid
ing beam particles\n(protons) are not themselves fundamental. In order to
be able to make very precise predictions for what is expected to be observ
ed at the LHC\, we need to have a correspondingly precise knowledge of the
structure of the proton. The talk will review our current understanding o
f this proton structure and discuss some implications for the LHC.\n
