DESCRIPTION:The topic looks at the historical sources on which climate sci
 ences drew in the period around 1800: the theme emerges from work Professo
 r Schaffer has been contributing to the Leverhulme Project on 'Making Clim
 ate History'\, in the department of History and Philosophy of Science and 
 the department of Geography.\n\nSimon Schaffer was trained in natural scie
 nces and history & philosophy of science at the University of Cambridge an
 d Harvard University. He has taught history of the sciences at Imperial Co
 llege London\, at UCLA and at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences So
 ciales\, Paris. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and Sarton Medallist
  of the History of Science Society\, and a Fellow of Darwin College. His r
 esearch addresses the practices\, materials and organisation of scientific
  inquiry between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries\, including stud
 ies of astronomy\, natural philosophy\, technology and the physical scienc
 es. Professor Schaffer has collaborated with several museum and gallery pr
 ojects. He is currently a co-investigator on the Leverhulme Project 'Makin
