DESCRIPTION:On Thursday 9th November Prof. David Fergusson wil
l be speaking at The Faraday Institute for Science
and Religion Public Lecture entitled: ‘The Persis
tence of Faith: Scientific and Theological Perspec
 tives’.\n\n*Abstract*\n\nAlmost all the leading Ch
ristian theologians have regarded religion as a na
tural phenomenon evident in every society. Though
their assessments of the value of a _sensus divini
tatis_ vary\, this assumption about the rootedness
of religion in our human condition is pervasive.
As a ‘natural’ phenomenon\, religion is thus avail
able for description and explanation by both the n
atural and social sciences. In this lecture\, I co
nsider a possible tension between accounts that af
firm religion as integral to our constitution and
those that suggest it will disappear or be diminis
hed under the conditions of modernity. In favourin
g theories that suggest a refraction rather than a
disappearance of religion\, I return to an evalua
tion of earlier theological accounts of this human
phenomenon. \n\nThe lecture will be held at the
  Queen’s Building Lecture Hall\, Emmanuel College\
, Cambridge followed by a short drinks reception.
All attendees are kindly requested to be seated by
5:45pm.\n\nThis event is in partnership with Chri
 stians in Science.\n\nhttps://faraday.institute/pu
