DESCRIPTION:Morphological and behavioural adaptations are key to colonize
novel environments. I will use the example of the fish model Astyanax mexi
canus\, to show the evolution of several sensory systems during adaptation
to total and perpetual darkness. As compared to their conspecifics which
swim in rivers\, cave-dwelling morphs of this species loose their eyes dur
ing embryogenesis\, and gain outstanding olfactory specialisation to recog
nize food odours. I will describe how the development and anatomy of the o
lfactory system and the behavioural responses to olfactory cues have evolv
 ed in cavefish.
