DESCRIPTION:We have an effective theory for understanding how to extend a
chiral conformal field theory -- e.g. it has been applied recently to clas
sify all extensions of the chiral theories associated to affine Lie algebr
as. But going in the other direction\, from the bigger theory to a smaller
one\, is a different story. The main method we have is looking at fixed p
oints of a subgroup of automorphisms\, but this is far from complete. Bisc
hoff explained recently the general situation for conformal nets: the smal
ler theory is fixed points by a hypergroup acting on the bigger theory. Hi
s argument is not at all effective\, and it isn't clear how it looks for v
ertex operator algebras. I will try to address hoth in my talk. This is jo
int work with my grad student\, Andrew Riesen.
