DESCRIPTION:I will discuss the quantization of one of the simp
lest theories of gravity\, three-dimensional Einst
ein gravity with negative cosmological constant. I
n particular I will describe a precise reformulati
on of AdS_3 quantum gravity in terms of a novel to
pological quantum field theory known as "Virasoro
TQFT." This proposal clarifies the relationship be
tween pure AdS_3 quantum gravity and (two copies o
 f) SL(2\,R) Chern-Simons theory\, and resolves som
e well-known issues with this lore. I will argue t
hat moreover this proposal provides a practical fr
amework for the computation of 3d gravity partitio
n functions\, and will describe how it elucidates
various aspects of the holographic dual.
