DESCRIPTION:In this talk we will discuss a model for elastic dislocations
describing faults in the Earth&rsquo\;s crust. We will show how to get the
well-posedness of the direct problem which consists in solving a boundary
-transmission value problem in an inhomogeneous linear elastic medium with
Lipschitz Lam&eacute\; parameters. Mostly we will focus the attention on
the uniqueness result for the non-linear inverse problem\, which consists
in determining the fault and the slip vector field acting on it from displ
acement measurements made on a portion of the boundary of the elastic medi
um. &nbsp\;Uniqueness for the inverse problem follows by means of the uniq
ue continuation results for systems of partial differential equations and
under some geometrical constrains on the fault. This is a joint work with
Elena Beretta (NYU &ndash\; Abu Dhabi)\, Anna Mazzucato (Penn State Univer
sity) and Maarten de Hoop (Rice University).
