DESCRIPTION:Stereotypes may serve as judgment standards against which we e
valuate individual members of stereotyped groups. This can lead to contras
t effects in subjective judgments\, as the use of within-category referent
s means that members of negatively stereotyped groups are judged relative
to lower standards than members of positively stereotyped groups. I descri
be evidence of gender- and race-based shifting standards in judgments of c
ompetence\, and discuss the role of stereotype-based standard shifts in in
terpersonal communication and in the translation of feedback.\n
