DESCRIPTION:A multimodal formulation of the wave propagation i
n heterogeneous media will be presented\, that all
ows us to solve complex scattering problems by arb
itrary shaped penetrable scatterers. Using a modal
expansion of the wavefield (in a domain bounded b
y various possible conditions)\, the problem reduc
es to a set of first order coupled equations for t
he modal components of the field. The numerical so
lution of these equations will be presented and di
scussed\, as well as the possibilities it offers t
o solve complex scattering problems. The case of d
isordered media\, made of a large number of scatte
rers\, will notably be analyzed and illustrated.
