DESCRIPTION:Two-scale simulations are often employed to analyz
 e the effect of the microstructure on a component&
 rsquo\;s macroscopic properties. Understanding the
 se structure&ndash\;property relations is essentia
 l in the optimal design of materials\, or to enabl
 e (for example) estimation of microstructure param
 eters through macroscale measurements. However\, t
 hese two-scale simulations are typically computati
 onally expensive and infeasible in multi-query con
 texts such as optimization and&nbsp\;inverse probl
 ems. To make such analyses amenable\, the microsco
 pic simulations can be replaced by inexpensive\, p
 arametric&nbsp\;surrogate models.&nbsp\;In this ta
 lk\, we (1) present some recent work on&nbsp\;a no
 n-intrusive reduced basis method to construct inex
 pensive surrogates for parametrized microscale pro
 blems\, and (2) highlight difficulties for model o
 rder reduction presented by highly nonlinear const
 itutive relations in multi-scale problems in mecha
 nics.&nbsp\;
