DESCRIPTION:We present an energy-sensitive X-ray imaging protocol for mate
 rial decomposition. A novel regularizer and and a specialized interior poi
 nt method for dual-energy X-ray tomography is presented for reconstructing
  separate images of intertwined materials. We propose a variational regula
 rization approach. The regularizer combines a non-negativity constraint wi
 th a penalty term to promote the presence of at most one material at a giv
 en pixel. Tests on digital phantoms suggest that the new inner product (IP
 ) algorithm outperforms the baseline method Joint Total Variation (JTV) in
  terms of correctly material-characterized pixels. The approach can easily
  be generalized to three dimensions and more materials.
