DESCRIPTION:Have you ever looked at the geology on show in you
r own college\, or in those\nyou pass every day? C
ambridge buildings\, many of them in colleges or\n
University sites\, record nearly a millennium of s
tone use\, probably the best\nrecord of any city i
n the UK.\n\nA new survey of Cambridge buildings s
hows the predominance of limestones\; 65%\nfrom th
 e Jurassic Lincolnshire Limestone Formation\, 10%
from Jurassic units\nelsewhere in England and 19%
from elsewhere\, mostly the local Cretaceous Chalk
\nGroup. Another finding of the survey is that\, u
ntil the completion of canal\nlinks to southwest E
ngland in 1815 and railway links across England in
1845\,\nalmost all Cambridge stone came from with
in 80 kilometres of the city. The\ntalk will take
an illustrated walk through the past millennium of
stone use\nand identify other less obvious factor
s that have influenced the choice of\nstone\, for
instance the Black Death\, the Wars of the Roses a
nd the Dissolution\nof the Monasteries. We’ll also
learn how to tell apart some of the\nsuperficiall
y similar common limestones.\n\nWe’ll take example
s from a wide range of colleges. However\, if your
  college\ndoesn’t feature\, I’ll provide links to
a newly revised guide to the geology of\neach coll
ege\, as well as to more detailed accounts of buil
ding stone history\nin Cambridge. I’m also glad to
take a geological walk with groups of you\naround
  your own college.
