DESCRIPTION:Uncertainty surrounding how structures interact wi
 th soil remains a key barrier to optimising cost\,
  time and environmental savings for underground co
 nstruction. This is particularly the case for larg
 e-diameter caissons used for the water and wastewa
 ter industry where soil-structure interactions cri
 tically affect the construction process. A recent 
 EPSRC-funded project (‘FOCUS’) sought to tackle th
 ese uncertainties using new measurement\, monitori
 ng and feedback systems by combining fibre optic s
 ensing with machine learning. This seminar provide
 s an overview of the project using a recent UK cas
 e history including the soil-structure insights ex
 tracted from the monitored data and the resulting
