DESCRIPTION:The principal aims of my three lectures are (i) to outline a f
ew basic concepts in multiple scattering theory and (ii) to offer an intro
duction to asymptotic homogenization. We shall proceed by examining a few
extremely simple 'toy' models\, which are mostly one-dimensional to reduce
the technical detail\, ease exposition and even produce closed-form resul
ts. These explicit results will allow us to verify that the homogenized ex
pressions for the effective material properties agree with those found fro
 m the full solution in the long-wavelength limit.\nPerhaps surprisingly\,
many phenomena found in more realistic (and complex) multiple scattering m
odels can be observed in these simple examples\; as time allows I shall di
scuss these\, along with important features missing from my models.
