DESCRIPTION:This talk will summarise some of the key elements in the pheno
menology and physics of high-temperature superconductors (HTS). HTS are ch
aracterised by a rich phase behaviour as a function of doping with several
singular points associated with a metal/insulator transition\, a van Hove
singularity and possibly several quantum critical points. Characteristic
length scales are very short while several relevant energy scales are comp
arable in magnitude and large. This makes for an exceedingly complex milie
u in which superconductivity arises. Is this complexity essential to the p
henomenon of remarkably high-temperature superconductivity? Contrary to ex
pectation it will be shown that many aspects of the essential physics of t
 hese materials are\nsurprisingly conventional.\n
