DESCRIPTION:Bio: Dr. Shiladitya Sengupta is an associate profe
ssor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and lea
ds the center for engineered therapeutics at the M
ass General-Brigham Hospital. His laboratory use t
ools from nanotechnology and bioengineering to exp
lore biological phenomenon at unique scales and to
design new therapeutics. For example\, he develop
ed the first layer-by-layer nanoparticle that allo
ws targeting different components of a tumor on a
temporal scale (Nature). Recently\, his lab discov
ered a new mechanism of tumor immune evasion\, whe
re the cancer cells harvest immune cell mitochondr
ia through nanoscale tentacles (Nature Nanotechnol
 ogy). He holds over 50 pending/granted patents\,
and many of his inventions/research have led to st
art-ups\, which have raised over $300M in R&D fund
ing. Over 100 students and postdoctoral fellows ha
ve trained in his laboratory\, have won multiple b
est paper awards and fellowships\, and have gone o
n to successful careers in academia and in the bio
tech industry. He has received the TR35 Top 35 Glo
bal Innovators award from MIT Technology Review ma
gazine\, the Era of Hope scholar award\, and the S
cholar and Innovator award (with Erkki Ruoslahti a
nd Roger Tsien) from US Department of Defense\, et
 c. He completed his undergraduate education at the
All India Institute of Medical Sciences\, New Del
hi\, his PhD in Pharmacology as a Nehru and Cheven
ing scholar from Trinity College\, Cambridge Unive
rsity\, and his fellowship in biological engineeri
ng at Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, befo
 re joining Harvard as faculty.
