DESCRIPTION:The evolution of German national identity in the nineteenth ce
ntury is a perennially debated subject. While much has been written on nat
ionalism in the smaller German states\, especially in relation to regional
dynastic identities and the notion of 'Heimat' (homeland) in the Southern
kingdoms\, Prussian state-building in the narrow sense of the word remain
s underresearched. Focusing on the expanding military associations' moveme
nt in the formerly sovereign Kingdom of Hanover\, which only merged with t
he\nHohenzollern state in 1866\, my paper examines how veterans of the dis
solved Hanoverian army and younger army reservists engaged with the ambiva
 lent\nconnotations of Prussianness.
