DESCRIPTION:Hyperbolic groups are a class of groups that are very well und
erstood by geometric group theorists\, but they come with some annoying pr
oblems. For example\, many nice groups that feel as though they should be
negatively curved fail to be hyperbolic\, for example the mapping class gr
oups of hyperbolic surfaces. For this reason we now have a few ways to gen
eralise the class of hyperbolic groups to allow them to include some of th
ese examples.\n\nOne such generalisation is Acylindrical hyperbolicity\, w
hich can be shown to be the class of groups that act in a particular way o
n metric spaces quasi-isometric to trees. In this talk I will define this
concept\, and discuss the problem of restricting this definition to only i
 nclude actions on trees themselves.
