DESCRIPTION:Nonlinear optics and photonics remains an emerging
field both in modeling foundational physical proc
esses and applcations.&nbsp\; At the heart of adva
ncing new knowledge is the technological ability t
o manage dispersion and diffraction. As it relates
to diffraction\, I will discuss a somewhat novel
concept in photonics\, but well known in other fie
lds: Fractional diffraction and the fractional Lap
lacian. Combined with nonlinear effects\, the disc
rete and continuous fractional Nonlinear Schroedin
ger equation (fNLSE) emerges as a model of interes
t in optics and photonics. Recent results and theo
retical challenges will be presented in this talk.
