DESCRIPTION:In many astrophysical MHD contexts\, the computational feasibi
lity of covering all the scales of interest (from the dominion size down t
o the dissipative scales) is and will be many orders of magnitude away fro
m what would be ideally needed. Large eddy simulations are used to partial
ly compensate such lack of numerical resolution\, introducing sub-grid-sca
le models. I present our compressible MHD extension of the so-called gradi
ent model\, that can be implemented for any problem\, equation of state\,
in relativistic and non-relativistic cases. I show the breakthrough result
s of our main application so far\, the magnetic amplification during merge
rs\, and we can all discuss possible direct applications to planetary dyna
 mo codes.
