DESCRIPTION:I will discuss older joint work with Wilfried Schmid on constr
 ucting Whittaker functions (and more generally\, Whittaker models) for GL(
 n\,R).&nbsp\; Our approach extends the generic character (from the definit
 ion of Whittaker function) to a distributional section of a line bundle\, 
 via birational maps which desingularize the various disjoint pieces in the
  Bruhat decomposition.&nbsp\; A recent breakthrough by Doyon Kim gives a f
 ormula for the birational map\, from which the main properties of Whittake
 r models become manifest.
