DESCRIPTION:Jan Saxl and I were exact contemporaries as DPhil students of 
 Peter Neumann in Oxford. Our first research collaboration began six years 
 later\, a year before the finite simple &nbsp\;group classification (FSGC)
  was announced. My talk will reflect on our research collaborations\, ofte
 n also with Martin Liebeck. A major theme was application of the FSGC on p
 roblems involving permutation groups\, graph symmetry\, and simple group s
 tructure.
